Codeium offers AI completion and chat with a generous free tier for individuals and a self-hostable enterprise option for compliance-driven teams. Quality is below Cursor and Copilot but above the unfunded competition. The differentiator: privacy/self-host, free for individual devs, and 70+ IDE plugins. Best when budget or data residency is the constraint.

Best free tier in the category.

I freelance — the free tier is genuinely production-quality for autocomplete. Switched from Copilot specifically because Codeium's individual plan is free indefinitely.

Self-host was the unlock for compliance.

We can't send code to OpenAI. Codeium self-hosted on GPUs in our DC met the compliance bar. Quality is below Copilot but the alternative was no AI at all.

The only AI tool that ships an Eclipse plugin.

My team is on Eclipse for legacy reasons. Copilot doesn't. Codeium does. That's the entire reason we picked it.
