License-key API is the killer feature for software products.
I sell a $99 desktop app. LemonSqueezy generates a license key on purchase, my app validates against their API. Zero infrastructure on my end. Could not be simpler.
Merchant of record for digital products — lighter and faster than Paddle
LemonSqueezy positions as a merchant-of-record platform optimized for digital products, downloads, software licenses, and SaaS subscriptions. Similar MoR value proposition to Paddle (handles tax, compliance, payments) with a stronger emphasis on shipping speed and developer experience. Acquired by Stripe in 2024 but operating as a separate brand. Take rate is competitive with Paddle (5% + $0.50). Best fit: indie SaaS, course creators, software-license sellers, downloadable goods. Less optimized for high-volume B2B SaaS than Paddle.

Course sales + tax + EU VAT, all handled.
Sell a $399 course globally. LemonSqueezy collects payment, calculates VAT, files MOSS. I get a clean dashboard and a deposit. Time spent on tax compliance: zero hours.
Watch the post-acquisition product roadmap closely.
Stripe bought them in 2024. Product is fine now but if Stripe deprecates LemonSqueezy in favor of Stripe Tax + Stripe Billing, we will migrate. Hedge: we keep our integration thin.
