European-origin SMS, WhatsApp, voice — strong on local carriers across Europe and APAC

MessageBird (rebranded as Bird in 2024 but still operating as MessageBird API surface) is the European-strong messaging API. Originally launched in Amsterdam, the platform has the deepest local-carrier relationships across Europe and Southeast Asia of any major messaging provider. WhatsApp Business API native (Meta partnership) and Voice API competitive with Twilio. The trade-off: developer experience and documentation polish below Twilio, smaller community for troubleshooting, and US-market delivery occasionally slower than Twilio domestic routes.

EU delivery rates beat Twilio for us. Cost is half.

Send 200K SMS/month across DE, FR, IT, ES, NL. MessageBird local-carrier routes are faster than Twilio international and cost ~50% less. For European-primary product, the choice is clear.

WhatsApp Business API approval was faster than via Twilio.

Meta approval process is the gating step for WhatsApp Business. MessageBird had us live in 4 days. Heard from peers at competitors that Twilio took 2-3 weeks.

US toll-free messaging less reliable than Twilio. Switched back for US.

For US-domestic toll-free SMS we had delivery issues. Moved that traffic to Twilio. Kept MessageBird for international. Dual-vendor for the win.
