Branch databases changed our preview-environment economics.
Each PR gets a forked DB. Idle previews cost almost nothing. Engineers test against real schema-evolved data. We saved $40K/year in RDS costs and got better preview testing.
Serverless Postgres with branching and instant scale-to-zero
Neon is Postgres rebuilt for serverless: instant scale-to-zero, database branching like git, and storage separated from compute. Branch databases for preview environments cost essentially nothing when idle. Pricing is per-second of active compute. Trade-off: cold-start adds 200-500ms to the first query. Best for serverless-heavy apps and teams that want preview-environment databases without paying for them when idle.

Postgres without provisioning.
I don't want to size compute. Neon scales when traffic comes, sleeps when it's gone. Cold starts are real but acceptable for our async workloads.
Postgres internals respected, not papered over.
I've built Postgres infra for 15 years. Neon's storage/compute separation is architecturally serious. Logical replication setup is more involved than vanilla Postgres but supportable.
