Boring in the good way.
12 months in production. Zero outages. Latency is consistent. We moved off Weaviate self-hosted because the ops cost wasn't worth the savings. Pinecone serverless just works.
Managed vector database with serverless scale
Pinecone's serverless tier auto-scales without provisioning. Multi-region replication is one-click. Hybrid search (sparse + dense) shipped in 2024 and is genuinely competitive with Weaviate. The trade-off vs self-hosted: cost at billions-of-vectors scale gets expensive. Best for teams that want zero ops and predictable performance under 100M vectors.

Get to RAG in 2 days, not 2 weeks.
For a 5-person team this is the right call. Hybrid search shipped exactly when we needed it. The free tier is enough to validate the architecture before paying.
Reconsidering at our scale.
At 200M vectors we're spending more on Pinecone than the rest of our infra combined. Evaluating Qdrant self-hosted. Below 50M, Pinecone is the right answer; above 200M, the math shifts.
