Enterprise communications API — formerly Nexmo, now part of Ericsson
Vonage API Platform (formerly Nexmo, acquired by Ericsson in 2022) is the enterprise-leaning messaging and voice provider. Strong international coverage, video API (built on TokBox), and emerging AI-voice products. The Ericsson backing means enterprise procurement and SLA conversations are smoother than at startup-stage competitors. Trade-off: developer experience and pricing both feel more enterprise-y than Twilio or Plivo. Best fit: enterprises with existing Ericsson relationships or needing the most complete international coverage outside the Twilio ecosystem.

For enterprise procurement, having Ericsson as the parent meant our legal team approved the vendor in 2 weeks instead of 6. The DX is fine. The legal velocity was the win.
TokBox heritage means Video API works in production.
Built a video-consultation feature. Vonage Video API (TokBox underneath) has been deployed in healthcare and telehealth for years. Reliability is there. Pricing more than alternatives but mature.
Pricing opacity disqualified us. We went Twilio.
Could not get a SMS-price quote without a sales call. For a 10-person startup that is a deal-breaker. Stayed on Twilio where pricing is on the website.
